  16. of colon cancer operations; in Brussels. The first German to
  17. hold NATO's top civilian post, Worner steered the 16-member
  18. alliance through the dramatic changes that attended the end
  19. of the Cold War. Following the demise of the Warsaw Pact, Worner
  20. helped to build cooperation between the Western alliance and
  21. its former Eastern enemies.
